2.3mm Restrictor Mod

This is an often talked about mod. I've had it installed for sometime. At first I made my own out of plastic then SuperRU was nice enough to supply me with one he made. The following is some info on how to install it and some of the thoughts around the mod itself. At the end Richard (SuperRU) has a nice write up on how to make a very nice restrictor of your own

Based on this thread's info:

A change of 1.5 mm that you say is suggested is excessive. I would think a .2 or .3mm change would bring up the power without causing what is called hysterisis or a hunting of the boost values.
I have an idea that I plan on trying. If Mike says .2 or .3mm more will be safe that's what I plan on doing. I came up with going from the current 1/16" (1.5875mm) and adding 0.2-0.3mm a #49 bit will work nicely. After talking to a guy in our shop I found we have a #49 drill bit that is 1.8542mm (0.073") that falls just about in the middle of the .2-.3 more. I need to get some 1/4" ID brass stock and get it to my friend. With a drill press we can make a few of these things up. My guess is 3/4" long or so should work. Now I just have to get to a hardware store .

This is what I ended up making at first:

The following is a contribution of Richards (SuperRU on the Forester Forum )

Begin quote:

If you want to make your own this is how I make my version of the "2.3 mm" restrictors.
An ordinary 3/16" barbed splicer is what I start with. You can find them at most any hardware store.
You will also need some 1/8" OD hollow brass tubing shown in the fourth picture.

The 1/8 brass tube is a snug fit so just a little flaring of the ends will keep it in place.

I measured the ID of various restrictors using numbered drill bits as a gauge. This is not the most accurate way to do it but, it will give a good comparison of the differences between them.
XT 5speed #51 / .067" / 1.7 mm (the ones I’ve seen have been white)
XT 4EAT #48 / .076" / 1.93 mm
WRX #46 / .081" / 2.06 mm (part#22314KA040)
“2.3 “ #42.5 / .091" / 2.3 mm (It is a very tight #42 and a lose #43, yes I know I took some liberty here in naming and sizing it )

Fresh from the oven after powder coating. The Eastwood Hotcoat Powdercoating system is great and cheap.

I will leave it to others more knowledgeable than I to speak up about the merits of various sized restrictors for different applications.
I just enjoyed making this one for fellow enthusiasts.
