K&N Airfilter Information for MAF cars

he K&N filter that will fit the 99' and back RS (with a MAF - will also fit Legacy's too, at least it fits my 97 MY) is
PN 33-2031-2 the -2 at the end is a relatively new PN denotes it comes with 2 foam strips that are needed for use in a Maxima I think. (it use to be PN 33-2031-1) I ended up cutting each strip length wise to make it thinner and used it between the bottom part of the airbox and the fender after removing the snorkus (intake silencer) from the fender. I mention getting foam gasket material here at this link:

This is he best way I've found to ensure you install the K&N panel filter properly. Since the filter is harder rubber than the OEM filter it can be hard to get it seated and the box latched. I tried to do it with the box in place but couldn't be positive it was sealed properly. I wasn't sure it didn't slip out of place when I clamped the box closed. I thought I was squishing out the gasket by the hinge and there is no way of telling once the box is closed. What I found helpful was to just remove the whole airbox. The top and bottom then install the filter while it was out of the car. It may sound like a lot of trouble but it's not.

Loosen the hose clamp from the tube that goes to the MAF pull the tube off. It may be necessary to remove the other end of the tube too depending on your setup. Unplug the MAF. Remove the 2 - 12mm bolts holding the bottom half of the airbox to the lower fender well. The airbox should lift right out now. There is a rubber grommet in the fender that a protrusion fits into. It just slides out. With the filter box out you can undo the top clips and open the box. When you put the new filter in it's easier now to get the bottom tabs in place and clamp the filter in there snapping in the top clips. While you have the box out you can remove the rubber gasket that's shown in the above URL and also put the supplied foam gasket material around the hole in the fender to seal the gap between the fender and the airbox keeping out the hot air. This may sound like a lot of work but it only takes about 20 min or so. Of course you should have removed the Snorkus already. Plus with the box out you can look in the intake hole and see if the filter is properly seated. Made me feel better anyway.

I replaced the intake on a WRX with a CAI and while I had the WRX OEM airbox out I discovered it also has the same filter as the Legacy and my 99 Impreza. So the above applies to the WRX.
