Coolant & Conditioner
I'm planning to change my coolant on a 2003 WRX. I have a few questions regarding the fluid to use:
1)The Subaru Long-life coolant is non-amine, phosphate stuff. Is Prestone 50/50 the same? 2)If the Prestone is OK, do I still need to add the coolant conditioner? 3)Is there a non-Subaru conditioner I can use too? 4)How much does the Subaru coolant and conditioner cost? 5)Is one bottle of coolant and conditioner enough for the WRX (it seems the coolant requires you to mix with distilled H2O)? Thanks. some links I found: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5316 http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2993 |

I don't know about Prestone. Zerex G05 is the prefered aftermarket stuff. One bottle of the Subaru conditioner is all you need and is the ONLY conditioner that Subaru excepts to extend your waranty to 8y/100K miles so use it.

Redline Oil Water Wetter
Has anyone tried this in a Subaru and what were the results. It is supposed to lower the coolant temp by 8 - 20 degrees. I'm thinking about adding it to my 03 Outback at the coolant change this spring. Thoughts???

Water wetter works well in racing when used with pure water as a coolant. Too many on this and other NGs have reported sludge problems when used in daily drivers running antifreeze. I think the 8-20 degree drop in temp is difficult to belive considering that in a correct running vehicle the thermostat controls the coolant temperature. I think it's PR and not backed up with good data.

So I went to the local Subie dealer and picked up a gallon of coolant that they use. They gave me a jug of Valvoline Zerex Original Green. Looking at the back of the jug, it's for all sorts of metals, including aluminum engines.
But the Valvoline site suggests to use Zerex Dexcool. Can they both be used? I do feel comfort knowing that the dealer gave this to me and this a good sized dealer in Chapel Hill, NC. |

One year ago I emailed Valvoline asking which coolant for my Forester and they answered their G05 which is an HOAT based coolant. I see they still sell it at PepBoys. Why not ask the question at the valvoline web site as to which coolant they recommend for you?

Drinking Coolent
I just bought a 04 WRX, 69K on it. Everything is clean runs great according to statistics, however it's drinking coolent. I've filled the expansion tank twice in a week and a half. I'm not running it hard, it's not over heating, nor is it leaking. Is this at all evident of the model? I'm hoping it's not dumping into the engine through a seal. Could it be evaporating within the tubro cooling system? Thanks

dexcool can be left in your car a bunch longer, but it is more expensive, and I use water wetter in my car (03 wrx) I have a 160 thermostat and koyo rad, among a bunch of go fast parts and the water wetter makes a difference, you can see it is you dyno the car without it, it heats up faster, and stays hotter longer( prior to the formentioned I had had overheating problems to the dyno. It's a redline product, that make nothing but good stuff
