Forester door speaker grill

To improve the front door speaker sound, I removed the factory plastic grills and replaced them with metal speaker grill material. The stock grill is not very acoustically transparent. If you look at it from anything but straight on you can barely see the speaker behind the grill.

You obviously cut from the other side. I forgot to take a picture of the front. Be sure to tape it up well so you don’t damage the door panel.

It takes a little patience to get the new grill sized right. I first made a template. Then cut the grill material with ordinary tin snips. I used a belt sander to slowly grind it to the right size. 3M double sided molding tape around the edge will hold it in place. I touched up the paint on my grill with Rust-Oleum Satin black paint. Black permanent marker will cover the gray inside edge of the double sided tape so you don’t see it.

The grill material I used is from an Alpine sub woofer. They cost me $10 each. The cut up grill pictured is a 12". 10" will work too. They only had one 10" in stock so I bought one of each.

Here is a link to some even cheaper grills.

This mod makes a nice improvement in the sound quality.
