Good news, now your trunk monkey can let himself out for a potty brake. No
more being woken up in the middle of the night by the noise of your Trunk
Monkey pounding on the boot, wanting out to pee.

Because I have a little kids I installed the internal trunk release handle
retrofit. I got it from Lisa Wilkins at Subaru of Gwenitt (in vendor section). List is 50 but her
price shipped was 40. The prices are the same for the Legacy's too.

PN X5751AC000 - Legacy except LSi 95-99

PN X5751AC010 - Legacy LSi 95-97

PN X5751AE000 - Legacy 00-01

What you'll need (besides the kit)

Drill with an 8 mm bit - to drill 5 holes

Block of wood - put on the other side of the metal when drilling holes

Small rat tail file - de-burr holes

Pen or scribe - Mark where to drill holes

Center Punch - to punch hole marks to prevent the bit from walking

Hammer - to hit the punch

The install is very easy. The kit consists of a handle, new latch with a
cable and 5 push in molly type fasteners. Basically you take off the
existing latch by removing the 2-12 mm bolts and unlatching the plastic
clip from the attached rod at the lock tumbler. Put on the new latch by
snaking the cable to behind the key tumbler and hooking up the new rod
securing it with the plastic latch. (only torque the bolts to the latch to
12 ft/lbs) Put the handle in the hole behind the keyhole in the trunk lid
(it only fits in there nicely one way) mark where the 5 holes are with a
pen or something like that. Use a punch at the center of each of the
marks to prevent the drill from walking around. Now here is a very
important part that I can't stress enough. When you drill the holes (8 mm
bit) put a small block of wood on the other side of the hole. When the
drill penetrates it could very possibly grab the metal and push the bit
through the back of the trunk lid at the very least it will make a good
dent. This will make you very unhappy. The first hole I drilled grabbed
but I stopped the bit just short of hitting the other side. Then I found
some wood. Once you drill all the holes, de-burr the holes so the handle
sits flush. Hook the end of the cable from the latch into the handle. Put
the handle in place and put in the five fasteners. That's about it. The
only difference with the Legacy is there is a small plastic shield on the
latch that has to be removed and replaced. That and the Legacy has nuts
and not bolts holding on the latch.
