View Full Version : Security Upgrade for MY 03+ (aka OEM Alarm)
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:06 PM This is a pretty simple mod, everything is plug and play and you only need a few tools. The security update is really just an add on to the keyless entry system. That's why it's so easy to do.
I'll post my pics in order and then the install manual.
I got the parts from Lisa W. aka "Sugar" as a vendor on the boards.

What you need:
Phillips screwdriver - To remove a gazillion screws
10mm socket or open end - To install auxillary horn on strut tower
12mm socket w/ extension - To install relays and security module
Black electrical tape or wire tie - To secure horn wire harness away from Turbo heat shield.
First, undo the battery at the negative side.
Then remove the glove box, I have photo's of how to do that here:
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2071
Then behind the box find the harness for the security box, notice the two stud at the top left of the pic, that's where the bracket to the module mounts.

Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:12 PM Sorry somehow I forgot to take a pic of the module mounted but you can see where it goes in the manual below. Install the 2 12mm nuts to secure it. It say to torque to 5 ft lbs in the manual. I just took a SWAG at it.
next move on to installing the relays under the steering wheel. There are 2 screws to remove to drop the lower dash down.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:13 PM and this one then the dash will pull away with a gentle tug
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:15 PM I let the dash sort of dangle there. Just don't put any pressure on it.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:16 PM Locate the two relay plugs. Subaru likes to wrap things that you are to use later for installed things with white tape so you can find them easier. But they do like to tuck things up in there so they are hard to find. Here is where they are
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:17 PM After you undo the white tape pull the harness plugs down. one of the relays has a jumper plug in the end, remove the jumper.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:19 PM Plug the into the relays
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:20 PM Then mount them up under the dash, you'll need a 12mm socket and an extension to make it easier
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:21 PM Next install the aux horn on the strut tower.
(that should read over the existing nuts.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:26 PM Locate the wiring harness to the horn, again it's hidden below where the tubo is but has white tape holding it on.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:27 PM undo tape and extend the wire
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:29 PM Put the plug in the horn and then for good measure tape back the wire. It was too close to the turbo for my liking.
Peaty 07-19-2003, 12:30 PM Now test the system before you put all the stuff back together. If you have a problem look at the install manual below and check things out.
Here is page one keep in mind that this part number is for the Turbo XT, NA uses a different PN I've attached that pdf here

Peaty 09-08-2003, 09:08 PM Interesting tid bit
Peaty 10-06-2004, 05:19 PM Some info on "Passive Arming" or letting the Security System turn itself on 60 seconds after you close the last door. This will not lock the doors but the alarm will sound if the door is opened and the starter will be disabled. The only way to lock the door is with the key or using the remote. You can still arm the system manually with the remote, but then the system will arm instantly and not in 60 seconds like when it does it passively.
It's pretty simple to put the system in Passive Mode, you simply have to plug together a harness that is hidden behind the drivers side (LHD) kick panel by your left foot. To get to it you need to remove two fasteners and pull back the plastic. Here are some photo's to show where the plugs are and also how to get to them. Obviously if you dont' like passive mode you can just unplug these and remember to arm the system yourself l :o
BTW this info is buried in the owners manual :)
Peaty 04-08-2005, 03:03 PM Update from silverghost on the Forester Forum. It seems there is a change in the procedure for the 2005 MY Forester:
---------------------------------
I bought the Subaru security upgrade from Jamie at Chaplin's (great service and fast shipping... thanks Jamie). I followed the link to the scoobymods website for installing the security system. Everything was right on the money except for mounting the two relays. Apparently Subaru changed the mounting bracket ( at least on my 2005). It does NOT look the same as in the scoobymod picture and the factory instruction picture needs alot to be desired. I tried for an hour to figure out how to mount the relays with the stock components already there but couldn't figure out the jigsaw puzzle. Idea After much frustration I removed the metal brackets that came with the relays, taped them together with electrical tape and then tucked them under the dash. The alarm works great. I may be wrong but I don't believe those two relays need to be grounded the way the brackets were attached to the relays. Others please chime in if they do need to be grounded.
I hope this helps some of you out there with '05 XT's so you don't have to go through the same hassle I went through.
S.T.
