11/9/03: Hella 500 driving lights installation on a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS
I've always wanted to install 4 Hella 500 driving lights on my car. As I was looking at my car, I finally decided to install them.
Parts Needed:
Hella 500 driving or fog lights. ($64.99 a pair)
Custom mounting brackets. I used four pieces of 5in x 1.5in aluminum bar.
Bolts and nuts to secure the bracket onto the car.
Tools Needed:
Drill and drill bits
Screwdriver
Ratchet and sockets
Soldering gun
Rotary tool
Electrical tape
Making the mounting bracket:
Go to your local hardware store, and buy 4 aluminum bars. The dimension should be 5in x 1.5in each.
Make 2 holes on each bar. The first one is for the Hella light, and the other is for securing the bar to the vehicle. For the light hole, I drilled a hole at 0.75in from the edge of the bar. For the mounting hole, I drilled a hole at 1.5in from the other edge of the bar.

Installation Procedure:
[list=1]
Take the grill off the car. There is a tiny hole on each side of the grill. Insert and push a little knob inside of the hole with a flathead screwdriver. That would let you take the grill off.
There are 24 inches of space between the headlights, and the Hella light is about 6.25inches in diameter. I decided that I would give each light a 7 inch space. So, mark drilling points at 3.5 inches to the left and the right from the center. Then, mark 2 more drilling points at 10 inches to the left and the right from the center.
Drill holes big enough to accomodate the bolts that you're going to use to mount the bracket.
Secure the brackets to the car.
Mount the Hella lights to each bracket.
Wire the lights according to the provided instruction with the lights. I decided to control all 4 lights with 1 switch. Also, I set them up so that when I have at least the parking lights on, I can turn the Hella lights on.
Install the grill.
Test the lights.
You must use 2 sets of wiring harness. If you only use 1 wiring harness (1 fuse, 1 relay, 1 power wire etc etc..), you may overload the harness.
