The SR7 laser/radar detection system is very similar to the ZR3 laser shifter package, so the install is almost identical. I bought the two to be used together, which merely entails using the ZR3 shifter modules in place of the SR7 laser sensors.

The package is intended for "professional installation" but anyone who has done car audio can do this.

FRONT MODULES

There are two laser shifter modules and one radar sensor module. Because my state requires a front license plate, I didn't have a lot of room to put the modules but they fit easily in the lower bumper opening. I mounted the two laser shifters to the upper part of the opening on either side of the license plate with the included screws/brackets and used some silicone sealant for good measure. It is important that the shifters are unobstructed and parallel to the road.

The radar unit was attached to the lower part of the opening. Right in front of the radiator is an unused hole that is threaded for an M6 bolt. I secured the radar unit to the hole with an M6 bolt as well as using 3 screws.

Once mounted, I bundled the three wires from the front modules together and used spiral wrap from Radio Shack to protect them. I fed the lines up under the air intake, along the passenger side engine bay to the firewall where they entered through the existing hole of the A/C/heater vent hose. Alternatively, you can snake the lines along the driver's side engine bay and into one of the firewall grommet's there--I was using both of those so I wanted another route.

The rear module simply attaches to the upper bolts holding in the license plate. Because I used a plastic clear license plate protector, the sensor's brackets had to be turned 90 degrees but you will have no problem if your plate has no cover. Getting the wire into the cabin is the tricky part. I drilled a 1/2" hole into the spare tire well behind the bumper and used the included grommet. I have also heard (S.Temple) that the license plate illumination light can be detached and the wire fed through there into the cabin. Either way should result in no visible wire sticking out. Once inside the cable, you can route the wire behind the rear seats and under the carpet to the front just as you would a power cable for an amp.

Once in the cabin, you simply decide where you want to install the display, the stealth LED (optional), the mute button (optional) and the main integrator box (where everything plugs in). I put the integrator box under the passenger side dash area and fed it power from the head unit harness' switched power line.

DISPLAY

Some have put the small display box to the left of the cupholder (with some hacking of the front bezel), some in the guage cluster area... I wanted complete stealth so I put the display in the din pocket (Forester), attached with velcro. Allows you to close the pocket so no one even knows you have a radar detector--be it the police or a would-be thief.

I then mounted the stealth LED (green-OK, flashing red-trouble!) on the steering column next to the stock boost guage, for easy visibility.

As you can see, the install is fairly easy but takes about 4-5 hours in total. The system works great and is very unobtrusive for those who like to keep that uncluttered stock look. If you can afford a remote detector system, I say go for it! One downside is that you periodically must wipe down any dirt smudges from the front and rear laser modules.

BTW, I have a 2004 WRX wagon, but the install is more or less the same for other cars.
