As delivered, the WRX (and I guess other Imprezzas) when you hit unlock once it opens only the driver door, hitting unlock again unlocks the remaining doors. I don't know why, but I find this to be the single most irritating feature evern put on a car.
This modification will allow you to open all of your doors by hitting the unlock button once.
Overview: The key is plug B on the Integrated Unit. The integrated unit is a black plastic box with two plugs into it just above your left knee, mounted at about a 45 degree angle. Plug B is blue and has 16 wire positions. Wire 8 (Red) gets 12V output when the unlock button is pressed once and it opens the driver's door. Wire 7 (Red-Green) gets 12V output when the unlock button is pushed a second time and it unlocks the remaining doors. The solution is to tie wire 7 with wire 8 so they both get 12V at the same time when the unlock button is hit once.
Option 1: Cutting the harness.
- Remove ground wire from battery
- Cut wire 7 (Red-Green) about an inch from plug B. It's a little easier if you remove some of the wrapping tape.
- Cap the wire coming out of the plug because it will continue to get 12 volts sent to it even after the mod.
- Tap the harness end of the Red-Green wire to the Red wire.
- You can use a vampire or something more elegant.
- Replace ground wire to battery
- Test
Option 2. Modify the Integrated Unit.
- Remove ground wire from battery
- Unplug the plugs from the integrated unit and remove the integrated unit from the vehicle. It just slides in, you can yank it out, just be careful not to skin your knuckles. You could also remove the lower dash cover and remove the IU by removing a nut.
- Remove the cover from the integrated unit. There are just a couple of little tabs on either side of the cover, slide the circuit board out.
- Look at the area where plug B is connected to the circuit board. There are 16 prongs that run from the female plug to the circuit board.
- Find the prong that corresponds to wire 7. Be sure you have the correct prong.
- Cut the prong where it bends 90 degrees from the plug to the circuit board.
- Carefully bend the plug end of the prong over to the wire 8 prong.
- Solder the bent wire 7 prong to the wire 8 prong.
- Reassemble the integrated unit
- Reinstall the integrated unit
- Replace ground wire to battery
- Test
I did my mod on a 2003 WRX Wagon 5-speed. Be aware that the integrated unit is a different part number for automatics. I think the instructions are identical for an auto, but I don't know for sure.
That's it. Whichever option you choose you'll now be able to open all of your doors with one push of a button. Let me know if you have any feedback. I'd be curious to know how many other people do this mod.
Pictures to follow, I don't have a working camera at the moment.
