Intake Silencer Removal AKA Snorkus
Great Free Mod, very easy, less than 20 minutes start to finish. This mod allows you to actually hear the turbo, BOV and actually allows
the turbo to spool up a few hundred RMP's quicker. TOOLS: (1) Jack (1) Philips Head Screwdriver (10mm) Ratchet (Pliers) (Hacksaw) (Optional for additional intake modding) This mod is easier with two people. If you are doing this solo it may be easier to remove the fender liner. My method requires you to only jack up the front passenger side of the car. You don't have to remove the tire and you only remove one screw from the fender liner. Open hood and remove the "ram-air" scoop if you haven't already. Just use your pliers or ratchet and undo the two screws and pull the scoop out of the fender hole. Use the ratchet and remove the gold bolt that is in the fender. This bolt is right in between the hole you just uncovered by removing the scoop and the airbox. This is (1) of (2) bolts that holds on the silencer. Next, jack up the front passenger side of the car. With the screwdriver remove the pop rivet for the fender liner. This is the bottom most screw on the right side of the tire if you were to be looking right at the "SUBARU" emblem in the center of the wheel. A few inches higher, following the inner fender liner upwards, you will see a black clip holding the fender liner. Pull the liner off of this clip. Now get under the car. You will see a somewhat rectangular piece of plastic with (6) screw/rivets in it. Take this flap off . Now you will see (2) thumb screws with rectangular heads. The look like " [] ". Once these are removed the fender liner can be pulled off towards the tire. Looking up into the engine bay you can see the silencer. Ain't it cute the bolt is hard to get at but you can overcome!!! just remove this 10mm bolt and pull the silencer down down down. You've done it, you are silencer free. *******OPTIONAL********* You will notice once the silencer is out that the airbox doesn't quite sit up agains the hole in the fender. You can either put duct tape around it, get some weather stripping, buy some pipe ala Ganzflow or you could just hack the stock silencer. You can cut the pipe that originally attached to the airbox. Just pop this small piece back onto the airbox and into the hole into the fender. Voila! Also the hold left by the removal of the scoop and silencer can be plugged with the factory plug supplied to 2.5RS owners. I know that MY00-01 plugs also fit perfectly. IMHO this finishes the job nicely and looks very professional. Part costs less than $5 at the dealer I believe. Pop the fender liner back in, redo the clip, put in the fender screw, put the thumb screws back in. Reattach the rectangular splash plate back up. Lower the car slowly to the ground.

Just my take on the silencer removal mod, addendum to above, just to answer some questons I get on the mod from time to time:
Remove the silencer and everything in front of it completely as per above directions (this includes what's under the hood), plug the hole in the fender. It looks stock and keeps the hot side hot and cool side cool. Look here: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=179 The pic that is the third from the bottom will have the fender plug part number. It's OEM Subaru and fits perfectly. Plus there are some pics of the thing that lives in the fender. Do this: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=167 And this: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=187 There is no point in cutting up anything really. Plus if you do, you'll never be able to put it back together if you have to for some reason. The coolest air you can get will be from the fender. If you leave the part under the hood into the fender, you will still get some warm air from under the hood. From backwash off of the radiator and heat soak of the part. The fender has plenty cool air, it's by no means restrictive under there. The intake hole in the fender is high enough and shielded by the fender liner from water ingestion concerns. Note: if you do this mod w/ a NA Legacy or Impreza, there will be a harmonic drone or humming noise at idle. Pitch and volume varies with humidity. It's not all that bad but some find it annoying. I put a mandrel bent elbow (as per one of my links) in my system and it no longer does that.

Add-on to: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=113
Camperguy on NASIOC pointed this out to me - Thanx! I thought this was a nice clean finish. Camperguy posted this - it is not his car or mine, but a pic of someone elses. |

I didn't like that it was basically just held in place by the molding in the air box. I decided to use the bolt from the stock silencer to affix the velocity stack. See the picture of the stock silencer.

I moved this bolt to the velocity stack. Note the location is 1 1/4" from the inside of the stack column's out edge. The best way to do this is to use a straight edge inside the stack against the column and measure out 1 1/4" mark with a center punch and drill.

On the alignment of the bolt hole - 1 1/4" is also just inside the crest of the velocity stack.
Well unfortunately the battery in the camera ran out - but by the time you remove the resonator and based on these pix I think you get the idea. I also was not pleased with how far the column entered the air box. I initially trimmed off 1/2" and it is much better. After fully installing it looks like another 1/2" needs to be trimmed still but I didn't want to take it out and do it again - I will do it later. ![]() The part is available from Summit Racing Equipment - part number is AVC-19002 and was 29.90 total. When entering the part number a picture will not show up but this is the correct part. The column in the stack is 3" in diameter so it opens up the rubber seal to the same diameter achieved by those who remove the seal but this method closes the gap that results from removing the silencer, leaves the seal in and I think is a nice finish to the mod (after using the stock bolt and trimming to fit). |

Last note, if you don't reset the ECM you will get a CEL. The flow character IS different and apparently the MAF notices that something has changed. However, once the ECM is reset there is no CEL.
Someone very respected used to say any intake mod will throw off the MAF. I have seen this comment softened - any mods to the intake should be as far from the MAF as possible. I believe this one qualifies - though I think he generally still doesn't like the silencer removal. (I can't find direct quotes so don't want to name names.) |

Addendum To Intake Silencer Hack
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=113
I would like to add this to the end of this thread as another idea of what you can do. I can provide pics if you like, just let me know. The intake is very basic. I used the old one from my Accord. I bought two pieces of heavy duty 3 inch black PVC plumbing pipe from Home Depot." I had to add the "3 inch" part so the people know what size tubing to buy. One is a male-to-female 90* elbow, the other is a male-to-female 45* elbow. I took out the rubber ring from inside the OEM airbox. It has 3 white plastic screw type things holding it in. They pop right out. I had to file down a small "wall" that stuck into the round opening with a Dremel. You will see it once the rubber ring is removed. I layed the stock airbox back in the engine compartament and passed the 90 elbow up through the fender. I stuck the 90 elbow into the airbox, facing forward and slightly angled down. I then stuck the 45 elbow into the 90 and angled it down. Not too bad IMO. Better than stock. |

Mod Intaker Silencer (Cont)
I would like this thread to be merged with this mod: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...p?t=113&page=2
Just my little experience with the intake silencer removal mod: On the 2006 Subaru WRX, the intake silencer is white. Once you get the lining off, and look up in there, it's right in your face. Pretty easy to get out with the directions provided. I used the 3" 45º and 90º piping to replace the silencer. You can use the rubber ring inside the oem airbox with the piping, but it is a tight fit. And if the piping isn't put in gently, you will rip the rubber ring. I did! I also requested the fender plug (PN46059FA000), and unfortunately, it simply doesn't 'snap on' perfectly. It does FIT properly, just doesn't snap to the fender. I had to put some tape around it (for now...) so the vibration wont make it fall out. It still might, though... Looks pretty good, though. All and all, I'm probably just going to put the silencer back in. Don't expect any performance differences, and don't expect any good noises to come from it. You will hear a deep sound when the throttle is mashed into the firewall (when at low rpms--or mostly in higher gears), and you can hear the BPV once you let off the throttle. Unfortunately, if you THINK too loud, you wont hear the added noise. And the deep sound it makes now sounds kind of rice. Kinda ghey. |

Mine was white. I suppose I can take pictures, but it was already put back in. |
