Intake Silencer Removal

Another thing to do after doing the snorkusectomy:

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=113

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4475

The snorkus (aka silencer) slides into the air box via a rubber gasket
fitting. That fitting, the rubber/plastic thing, is attached to the air
box. It is restrictive in somewhat itself. I'm guessing it's best to
remove it. To do this you have to take the top of the air box off and
remove the bottom half of the air box from the car. It's held in by 2
bolts by the lower fender and a rubber bushing that just pulls out. Once
you have the box out you can remove the gasket by removing the 3 nylon
screws and pulling it off. This opening sits right against the fender
hole. So after you remove the gasket you should seal the opening by
putting some sticky foam around the hole in the fender, then put the air
box back, this will prevent any hot motor bay air getting sucked in giving
you only cool fender air. The sticky foam I used was some winter gasket
sealing stuff I got at home depot. It was like a 1/2" thick.

Here are some pics I just took to show what I'm talking about

Note

Same goes for the WRX, it's the same airbox as the Legacy, Impreza and Forester XT. Most any Scooby with an MAF.

Some math

If you just remove the silencer and leave in the gasket the opening is only 5.73 sq/in of open area [pi(2.7/2)squared]

If you have the silencer pipe in there the the ID is the same or slightly larger 2.76 in (I've measured it) with the ring and gasket removed the opening gives you 9.6 Sq/in [pi(3.5/2) squared]of open area for the air to flow.

Here is a shot of my fender plug and seal between the airbox and fender in my XT. The XT's fender to airbox is so large I had to use some Tygon tubing and glue it in place:

FYI OEM Fender plug PN46059FA000 around 5 bucks
