MOD: BEST DAMN WALBRO FUEL PUMP INSTALL for 2004 IMPREZA WRX
Page 1:
I’m back with my “BEST DAMN” series of mod write-ups after months of absence. I decided to write this up because: 1) I need to warm up for a HUGE FP16GEVO3 and STI pinks write-up possibly next weekend. 2) Fuel pump unit seems to be quite different from year to year Again, neither I nor Scoobymods.com is not responsible for any death/injury/destruction of your car as a result of your modding. Mod at your OWN RISK!! Tools needed: 8mm and 12mm sockets, Philips screw driver, pliers Difficulty: easy Duration: about one hour You need a Walbro 255lph pump designed for Subaru Impreza, which is going to be bolt-on. Some come with an installation kit with filter, tubings, clamp, etc. I found installation kit to be useful, but I have read of people reusing OEM parts. Cheapest vendor that I found was Gruppe-S: $90 shipped with installation kit. **WARNING** Make sure that your work area is extremely WELL VENTILATED. There will be gasoline fume, which could be hazardous to your health as well as being potentially dangerous if it ignites. Make sure that there is no fire or smoking nearby. Try to have as little fuel as possible in your fuel tank before you start. Last edited by keita; 09-23-2007 at 12:51 AM.. |

MOD: BEST DAMN WALBRO FUEL PUMP INSTALL for 2004 IMPREZA WRX

Start by removing the rear seats. 1) Unbolt 2 12mm bolts to remove the bottom cushion. 2) Unbolt 4 12mm bolts and lift up to remove the back cushion. If you've installed a rear strut brace, you've done this before. ![]() ![]() |

Now you can see the fuel tank cover behind this plastic/rubber thingie behind where the back cushion used to be. This thingie was in the way, so I removed the passenger side bar/LATCH anchor by unbolting 4 12mm bolts which made for an easy access to the fuel tank. ![]() ![]() |

Now you have a clear view of the tank cover, you remove this by removing 4 Philips screws. Voila, now you see the fuel tank, which was….dusty as hell. Before you move on, unclip the electrical connector to unplug the power to the fuel pump and start the engine. The engine will cut off after a few seconds, and this will depressurize the fuel system to minimize the spill. I also disconnected the battery at this time. Have a rag handy because you will still see some spilled gasoline. Now you unhook all tubing/connectors. One on the left is an electrical connection that unclips. One in the middle/front you squeeze the orange clip and the fuel line unclips. The remaining two are PITA. Loose the clip and slide them down, and you just have to grunt the tubes out. I could just push off the smaller line, but the larger one, I had to resort to grabbing it with pliers and inching it out little by little. Probably the most frustrating part of the install. ![]() ![]() Last edited by keita; 09-23-2007 at 12:37 AM.. |

Now wiggle the whole unit out and set is aside somewhere. I brought it inside the house onto my desk and got yelled at my wife because it stunk up the whole house. Perhaps it’s better outside or in the garage, just make sure that the area is very well ventilated. Now, remove the old pump by unscrewing one Philips screw driver on the bracket. Unclamp the clamp by the pump, unclip the power supply, and it should slide right out. Now you notice that the Walbro pump is a bit longer, which causes the Walbro to not fit well. There are a couple of options, I believe. There is a ??? thing next to the pump, I don’t know what it is, but in some other write-ups, I did not see this thing and I am uncertain as to how important this thing is. I was thinking perhaps that I could remove this and just replace with a fuel tubing that came with the install kit and call it a day. However that’s not what I did, because if it’s there, it might be there for a reason, so what I did, was to slide the ??? thingie toward the left (top of the fuel tank) to create a bit more space so that Walbro can fit, and this worked fine. I just cut a small piece of fuel tubing to fit between the pump and the ??? thingie, and it was all good. Install the filter, new pump isolator that came with the pump, tighten all clamps again, and the bracket and you’re all done. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Now you do the opposite of what you did to reinstall the pump unit. Two fuel tubing that were PITA to remove, will go back in a lot easier with some WD-40. After I plugged everything back in and bolted the fuel lid closed with 8 8mm bolts, I plugged the battery back in, turn your key, and make sure that you hear the fuel pump go and that the car starts. Then you car close the cover, install seats, and you’re all done. Now I have to take some Tylenol because I have a headache from killing quite a few brain cells from the gasoline fume. Next write-up: STI Pinks and FP16G Evo3 install |
