Oil Pressure Gauge Install

Thanks to STR8OUT over on the i-club for documenting this one and letting us use it..

Here is the nut your looking for. This is where you will tap your "oil pressure sender" once this nut is removed. I used an electronic gauge, highly recomended.

You have to take the intercooler off to get to the nut. You can remove this hose for now to make it eisier to work in there. There is nothing in it so you can just pull it off.

Here I am intalling the adapter. I used some threadlocker. Remember not to use teflon because the sender grounds off the engine.

It is ESSENTIAL that you have a crows foot wrench. You need it to intall the sender because if you look at the pic of the sender above, you will see that the part that your wrench has to grip is under the larger circular top. If you dont have a crows foot set, take your sender to an auto parts store and measure it up and GET ONE. There is no room to work down in that area.

This is my pathetic and patented "STR8OUT's adjustable homemade crows foot set up"

Please go and get a professional one. My engine was apart and I was stuck at my house, so I got crafty with the dremel. My install would have gone so much faster if I had a professional one.

Now all you have to do is put some threadlocker on the threads, and crank it down hard. My adapter piece was tapered so the threads in it look like this \ /. It gets harder to tighten as you go. Tighten it really tight. After that is installed, run your wires to your gauges and sometimes ground, put intercooler back on and your done!

Here it is installed with the intercooler back on.

His is a pic of my readings at idle after a 20 minute drive with the A/C off. 29psi.

Just to compare, I read around 82psi in 4th gear at 3000rpm.

Add-on to oil pressure gauge install.

Thanks to STR8OUT for pointing out this oil gallery location. And to chrislher for posting the part number of the gallery plug.

So now the question is where to put the sender for the oil pressure? I chose to use the same location as the stock dummy light switch. This location already has the same gallery plug in it used that you order for the rear location. It is behind and to the left of the alternator as you look at the front of the car.

My Omori has a remote mount hose (actual sender is located under the driver bracket of the IC). Note both plugs have a 1/8 PT (BSPT) thread in the center. My sender unit is 10mmX1.25 (and I think most others are too) - you can get about a 3/4 of the thread in but after that you are actually cross threading. The remote mount hose came with a 1/8 PT to 10mmX1.25 coupling. I could get the coupling in about 80% of the way by hand.

When I get the T coupling from Omori I will actually have the ability to hook the sender for the idiot light back up. That is another reason I chose this location for pressure.

Note: The idiot light switch is huge, larger than any of my wrenches - my guess is 24mm. I am not sure why it is that large there is no reason I can see except to discorage removal by those with an average set of tools.

Lightbulb Update

Additional info added by jehcpa:

5/4/03

Some have asked about whether the sender would be submerged in oil and read properly. My answer is yes I compared the read out from the stock pan gauge and the gallery Omori gauge and they are identical except the gallery is higher during warm-up. At operating temperatures they matched. Also as illustrated by leaks some have experienced at this location after an install the gallery does fill with oil and submerge the sender.
