PIAA sports horns

Contributed by Simon B, from the Forester Forum

This particular install is on a Forester 2001 S-turbo

---------------
I changed my stock horns over to PIAA sports horns
It was simple if only a little bit fiddly, the one installed behind the headlamp is the worst, as there's not much space, but the wiring is just 'plug and honk'. The factory wiring is a flat female clip with a squeeze release button, it just pops straight on the PIAA horn.

The horn in front of the radiator is very simple, the key is getting the knack of removing the grill clips. There are 3 on top that hold it in place (removed by pushing down the centre part and pulling the grill forwards towards you gently), and 3 at the bottom that just need you to lift the grill up and out (with a rather disturbing plastic breaking click noise!).

Once removed its very simple to remove the horn and rebolt the new one in its place. You'll have to unclip the headlight washer lines to get to the wiring and unclip the wiring from the rad support to get the cable to reach as its a little short (a quick bit of rerouting does the trick). The PIAA horns need earthed (grounded) from the second contact. I earthed the 'headlamp horn' to the front air intake bolt and the 'radiator horn 'to one of the radiator bolts. It took about 30 minutes.

Install Manual

PIAA SPORTS CAR HORN - Installation Instructions

Please read this entire manual before installation and use.

Your specific installation may require additional wiring connectors that are commonly available.

CAUTION:
Do not remove or alter the screw or the bracket on the backside of the horns. Doing so may alter their performance or may disable them.
Install the horns so the open end with the cover points down.
Do not install and wire the PIAA car horns so they work with the factory installed horns. Doing so may overload the circuit or may not pass local noise regulations.
Install the car horn in a location that will not get direct water spray or dust.
Install the PIAA Sports Horns in a location that is away from hot engine components.
Do not paint or apply any type on chrome plating or powder coating to the PIAA Sports Horn. Doing so may alter the tone or function of the horn.

CONTENTS:

One - horn A
One - horn B
Tow - ground (-) wires.

INSTALLATION:

Locate the factory horn(s) and determine what type of installation is involved. There are four warning installation scenarios (A,B,C,D), study each one and determine which one fits your application.

When mounting the PIAA car horn, mount them to a sturdy location with minimal vibration. Use a suitable fastener of 8mm (5/16") or smaller.

INSTALLATION TYPE A:

Two factory horns with tow ¼" blade connectors each.
Unplug the factory horns.
With an assistant to honk the horn use a test light or voltmeter to determine which wire is positive (+) and negative (-).
Connect the positive (+) wires to the top terminals on the PIAA Sports Horns.
Connect the negative (-) wires to the bottom terminals on the PIAA Sports Horns.

INSTALLATION TYPE C:

Single factory horn with a single wire plug.

Parts needed: Two insulated ¼" female blade connectors, approximately 3ft of 16AWG insulated wire, one splice connector
Cut off the factory plug and splice two lengths of wire to the factory positive (+) horn wire. Make sure the lengths of wire will reach the mounting locations of the PIAA Sports Horns.
Crimp an insulated ¼" female blade connector to the end of each wire that was added.
Plug the new ¼" female blade connectors to the top terminals on the PIAA Sports Horn.
Plug the included ground wires to bottom terminals on the PIAA Sports Horn and ground them to a good chasse ground (-).

INSTALLATION TYPE D:

Single factory horn with two ¼" blade connectors.

Parts needed: Four insulated ¼" female blade connectors, approximately 5-6ft of 16AWG insulated wire, two splice connectors.
With an assistant to honk the horn use a test light or volt meter to determine which wire is positive (+) and negative (-)
Cut off the factory ¼" female blade connectors and splice two lengths of wire to the factory positive (+) horn wire. Make sure the lengths of wire will reach the mounting locations of the PIAA Sports Horns.
Crimp and insulated ¼" female blade connectors to the end of each wire that was added to the factory positive (=) wire. Connect these positive (+) ¼" female b lade connectors to the top terminals on the PIAA Sports Horns.
Cut off the factory ¼" female blade connectors and splice two lengths of wire to the factory negative (-) horn wire. Make sure the lengths of wire will reach the mounting location s of the PIAA Sports Horns.
Crimp and insulated ¼" female blade connector to the end of each wire that was added to the factory negative (-) wire. Connect these negative (-) ¼" female blade connectors to the bottom terminals on the PIAA Sports Horns.
