STi muffler install on Forester XT

The XT exhaust is 2.5" from the cat back until it reaches the muffler section. At that point the pipe is reduced to 2.25. The STi muffler has 2.5" piping. You can find a used STi muffler cheap @ Nabisco or eBay. A few XT owners have already done this upgrade already and thanks for your work. My install is slightly different in two ways. I fabricated a front mount extension for the muffler. Most people have just ignored this factory hanger because it doesn’t line up correctly. Also for a stealth look I’ve reused the factory XT tip on the STi muffler.

First step is to cut off the pressed on fitting on the end of the front hanger where the bushing slides on. I reused this fitting so be careful and Dremel it off cleanly. After grinding the newly exposed end smooth, I cut some new threads with a ½ x13 die.

Using a ½ x13 rod coupling and some bolts I extended the hanger with a 3 ½ inch carriage bolt. The head of the carriage bolt needs to be ground down to match the shape of original pressed on fitting. The carriage bolt has had it’s threads extended with the same die used earlier. This allows you to now bolt on the original pressed on fitting after the head of it has been removed.

With a little tweaking I got the hanger to fit just like the stock muffler did.

The stock XT muffler exhaust tip fits rather nicely with a little work. First remove the STi muffler exhaust tip by drilling out the two spot welds. Then cut off the top mounting bracket.

The bottom bracket needs to be tapped for a bolt just like your factory XT setup.

Despite it’s smaller size the factory XT exhaust tip fits great after the top bracket has been removed.

I used Kartboy long exhaust hangers for the two rear hangers. The front two hangers line up great with stock hangers. http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/merch...ode=KB-011LONG
This combo lowers the tip to 1" from the bumper cover. The stock exhaust is 1 1/4".

I’d post a picture of the muffler from the back of the car but it looks completely stock. The sound of the Sti muffler is real nice. Not as loud as many aftermarket systems but definitely much sweeter than stock.
