STi Shifter Trim Install

Since we didn't have this, figured we'd add this. Many thanks go out to Vivid Racing for these nice instructions....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The infamouse STI shifter trim. Everyone wants it, nobody can figure out how to install it. What does it do? Nothing. Why do you want it? It says STI and makes your gear shift console look awesome!

STI shifter trim needs to be cut to install it. It includes the aluminum CNC ring and 6 screws to attach it. The center console needs to be removed for easy installation. Once removed you can measure appropriately to begin cutting.

Using a dremel, you need to widen out the console to fit the STI trims bolt hole areas. The trim will drop straight down once cut out properly. Make sure you widen only where the bolt holes are so the trim fits snug and no gaps can be seen.

You will want to take a small drill bit to drill directly through the trim holes into the boot. Once you have the console cut place it in on and drill straight down on each hole. Then you can take the screws provided and place them on the trim. The screws will pull the boot and ring to the trim for a secure fit.

Once it is all screwed together replace the console and you have a new bling factor!

STi shifter trim & boot replacement

So I just bought the STi shifter trim piece from a wrecked STi that is being parted out. I had the good fortune to get the entire centre console piece and shift boot with it, which makes life a lot easier, as you'll see in a moment.

I already had a Momo leather shift boot that I wanted to switch over along with the trim piece, so I figured I'd just Dremel out my existing centre console piece to allow for the screw holes in the trim. That worked fine - problem is, it appears that the plastic piece that the leather boot wraps around is actually different as well. The existing piece has a lip which interferes with the aluminium trim.

Rather than dremeling that as well, I decided to use the new centre console piece with the trim already attached, and just switch my Momo boot with the stock STi leather boot. Having gone through the painful process of pulling those metal clips off the plastic tabs once already, I was looking for a better (easier?) way to do it. Turns out, there is a better way. I'm sure that the Momo boot is like many other aftermarket boots in that it is much taller than it needs to be (especially with a short-shift kit installed!). I took the extra and folded it inside to take up a bit of the slack. Then I loosened the aluminum trim piece and used a small flat-bladed jeweler's screwdriver to pinch the shift boot in between the trim piece and the existing plastic piece that the boot wraps around. Note that I did this WITHOUT removing the "old" shift boot. Effectively, you're double-wrapping your shifter .

Anyway, once the new shift boot has been tucked all around the edges, I tightened the aluminum trim piece to hold it in place. It looks great and it's much less frustrating than trying to replace the shift boot!
