WRX pedals on an RS
What you'll need:
The parts: (for a manual tranny not currently available for the auto)
I got the pedals from Lisa Wilkins from Subaru of Gwinnett (Sugar in the vendor section) she can be reached at subaruperformance@yahoo.com or call 678-584-7241 The tools:
An extra person to help hold the gas pedal rod mechanism while you remove the gas pedal pivot pin is a good idea. They can also turn the butterfly by the throttle body to help get the cable back into the top of the rod when you reinstall it. Removing the OEM clutch and brake pedal is easy, they just pull off. Putting the WRX pedals on is relatively easy. Slide them on by starting at the bottom of the pedal base with the top of the pad and slide it up. The back of the new pad has sort of a "V" shape that fits around the pedal base. The tricky part is the top. Once you have the pedal seated, you have to get the small lip on the top back of the pad hooked over the base metal. I stuck a small flat bladed screw driver back there and worked the rubber over the pedal base. It took a while but I finally got it. Now for the fun part, the gas pedal. The whole pedal has to be swapped out not a cover. So the pivot pin has to be removed to get the pedal off. I tried to take the pin out with the pedal in place but it was not possible. First the whole accelerator pedal rod mechanism has to be removed. To do that you need to first take the throttle cable off of the top part of the rod. I used some needle nose pliers to pull out the cable (or you could have someone turn the other end by the throttle body) Once the cable is pulled you have to pop the white bushing out by pushing from the back. Then the cable can be slid out of the slot to the right. Once that is out of the way remove the two 12mm bolts and take the whole deal to a work bench. Rest the rod on something solid (see pics) and with a drift pin and hammer force out the pivot pin. Take notice how the spring is in there, it has to go back the same way. Once it's out you have to reuse the pin on the new pedal. Put the spring back in the proper way (I had to look at the pics I took). Again rest the rod on something solid NOT THE PEDAL when you hammer the pivot pin back in. The plastic will more than likely snap if you don't. I had to have a helper hold the pedal rod level while I hammered the pin in place. Put the rod mechanism in place and replace the two 12mm bolts but don't tighten them down yet Putting the cable back in was easier with someone moving the throttle cable by the throttle body. I put the cable bad in the slot after pushing the white bushing back in. Make sure all the tabs in the white bushing go in the hole, it's easy to bend them if you're not careful. Tighten the bolts down and you are done. Hope this is easy to understand, if not just e-mail me for any specifics. It took about an hour and a half to do total. Here is an update that Bill was nice enough to send me that will make the install easier. Thanks Bill
----------------- Peaty I have some suggestions you might want to add to your WRX pedal install instructions. I finally installed the accelerator pedal after a long period of worrying about its difficulty. What I found was that you can use a small screwdriver to hold the cable actuator open in the engine compartment. Since there are two of these you can use a small hole in the outside one to hold the one on the inside so there is slack in the cable. It worked like a charm. I then used a small flathead to pop the little grommet out of the pedal assembly arm. It slips right in at the edge and with a little pry it popped right out. I was able to avoid trying to press from the other side, which seemed like it was going to mangle my fingers. This was on a MY00, though I doubt there is much difference. I hope this is useful. An option for installing WRX brake and clutch pads
Installing the brake and clutch pads of a WRX pedal set is tough. Because of the metal face plate they are not as pliable as the stock all rubber pedals on the Legacy, etc.
In the FAQ, it was suggested to slide them on from the bottom and use a small bladed screwdriver to pry the top lip over the pedal. I tried and tried but couldn't do it. I finally used a knife, scissors, cutters, etc to trim down the top lip. I then sprayed them with industrial 3M spray adhesive and slide them on from the bottom. With the top lip trimmed I was able to press the top part flush with the pedal. I am hoping that the spray adhesive will keep them from sliding down, They feel like they are on there pretty tight. |

Trick for one person install of WRX accelerator pedal
In order to perform the pedal swap on the accelerator pedal, the entire pedal assembly needs to be removed. This is much easier to do when there is a little bit of slack on the accelerator cable.
With two people this is easy, but to make it a one person job, you can try this: ![]() This provides you enough slack to easily remove the cable from the accelerator pedal assembly. Last edited by Peaty; 01-24-2005 at 06:30 PM.. |
